LSO has always been concerned with identifying the major issues, concerns, and challenges facing youth sports leaders and their athletes. In 2006, the board renewed this effort, putting particular emphasis on the need to develop more extensive programs and funding to address the following areas:
General health issues (Coaches and players)
Motivating the youth player (Coaches and parents)
Nutritional updates (Educating the players)
Training frameworks (Best practices guidelines and training opportunities)
  • A series of key resources and needs where outlined. The need to more extensively educate and communicate to all members of the organization on the key topics above was deemed to be of importance. Primary sources being our web site and events we hold in the community (clinics, seminars, tournaments, etc.) (2005)
  • The development, funding, and launching of initial programs. The center piece of this phase beginning the hosting of a "Youth Sports Leadership Program" (2006
  • We will involve a series of potential surveys administered to major stakeholders in youth sports (coaches, parents, and administrators). Results will be used to: (1) identify the most pressing practical issues on which the LSO board should seek funding on; and (2) add to the body of knowledge relative to promoting positive youth development through youth sports. (2006/2007)
While a final program framework has not been approved, below are the two general “pillars” of potential programs. The items in the brackets following the names are the main group being focused on.
Endowment Program: (Our organization) We have been very fortunate over our 26 year history to have the support of local businesses, however a formal program remained to be developed guaranteeing our future. The need to attract larger business partners to our organization and elevate our resources to the needs of the fast growing community still remained. This opportunity to sponsor programs, clinics, and web resources will require a more systematic "Endowment Program" to work with local foundations, grant writers, and corporate donation programs. This program would compliment the current team sponsorship program and general fundraising we do and would be focused on attracting larger sources of funding above $2,500 per year.
Coaching Advancement Program: (Coaches) While most state youth sports programs offer certificates and training, the need for providing a “best practices program” for LSO coaches and a system that will help parents better understand what qualifications and qualities their coaches have. This program will also allow a more uniform approach to educating, documenting, and developing coaching staffs and support for all sports. General program designations being volunteer, assistant coach, coach, mentor, program director and coaching director.
